A-Toritaniキャンドルは手作りでありますが、使用するグラスも手作りです。 八重山キャンドルシリーズのグラスは、那覇の奥原硝子社と恩納ガラス社の手作りの琉球ガラスです。琉球ガラスは歴史には興味深いものがあります。 沖縄でのガラス製造は第二次世界大戦以前に始まりました。
しかし、実際にガラス製品の製造が本格化し始めたのは第二次世界大戦の終結後でした。 戦後から1972年まで続いたアメリカの占領の間に、沖縄に駐留していたアメリカ軍関係者はアメリカ製のソーダ飲料をたくさん消費しました。廃棄された空きソーダ瓶は地元の人々によって再利用されました。ガラス製品製造業者は、それらを破砕、溶融し、工業用、家庭用および土産用（ガラス、花瓶、装飾用の花）に有用で装飾的なガラス製品に成形することによってそれらを利用しました。ガラス製品の多くは米国の軍人らがお土産用に国に持ち帰り、地元のガラス産業の発展を支えました。
最初に製造されたガラス製品はソーダ瓶の元の色のまま使っていましたが、今日ではガラスは地元の自然の景色を表すような、美しくそして活気に満ちた色に着色して製造されています。今日、地元の職人はデザインや製品のためにソーダ瓶や他のガラス瓶をリサイクルし続けていますが、彼らはまた現代のガラス製造技術を駆使して、さまざまな形や種類のガラスを製造しています。琉球ガラスは手作り故に比較的厚くて不均一に形成されているため、キャンドルグラスとして非常に実用的で美しいです。 ガラスの色合いはさまざまで、それぞれのキャンドルグラスは二つと同じものはありません。

琉球諸島 琉球列島は、九州南方から台湾まで南西に伸びる列島群で、沖縄、大東、先島、宮古、八重山群島の各島々から構成されています。私たちの石垣ラボは、八重山群島の一部であり、東京から南西に遥か1900km離れたところにあります。
All of the A-Toritani candles are handmade. Our Yaeyama Candle series glass is handmade Ryukyu (Okinawa) glass from Okuhara Glass and Onna Glass companies.
Ryukyu glass has an interesting history; glassmaking on the island group started before WWII. However, it was not until after the end of WWII that glassmaking really started to increase. The US occupation (which ended in 1972) brought many things to the devastated and broken islands, and one of those things was a lot of glass bottles (in the shape of soda bottles). The empty discarded soda bottles were re-used by locals. They were broken down, re-melted and moulded into useful and decorative glass items for industrial, household and souvenir use (glasses, vases, decorative flowers). Much of the souvenir glassware was bought by the U.S military personnel and shipped back to the USA, thus helping to build, finance and shape the local glass industry.
Although the glassware produced initially followed the original colours of the soda bottles, nowadays the glass is produced in many different beautiful and vibrant colours, representing the colours of the local scenery. Today, local artisans continue to recycle soda and other bottles for their designs and products, but they also use modern glassmaking techniques, producing many different shapes and types of glass. Ryukyu glass is relatively thick and unevenly formed which makes it very practical and beautiful as candle glass. The shades of the glass vary, meaning that no 2 pieces are the same.
In 1998 Ryukyu glass was recognized as a traditional craftwork representing the Okinawa Prefecture and the industry continues to innovate and grow.
We work with two glassmakers in Okinawa; Okuhara Glass (the oldest glass maker) and Onna Glass. Our candles are available in a number of different types of glass containers; clear green, blue, orange and red. (to match the dazzling colour of the surrounding seas), a very warm and welcoming orange and a deep vibrant and beautiful red.
If you have the chance to visit Okinawa, you can visit both the Okuhara and Onna glass workshops and you can experience their glass blowing lessons.

Ryukyu Islands
The Ryukyu islands are the chain of Japanese islands stretching southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan and consist of the: Osumi, Tokara, Satsunan, Amami, Okinawa, Daito, Sakishima, Miyako and Yaeyama islands. Our Labo is based in Ishigaki which is part of the Yaeyama Island group and is some 1900km south west of Tokyo.
